“Third Brother, it’s your turn.”

Xu Zhaoyang screamed through a full song passionately before passing the mic to Zheng Wei. He then sat down next to Lin Yu, who was drinking silently and staring into space. He gestured toward the others and said to Lin Yu, “These animals have made their move. Are you losing to them?”

“I just wanted to ask something. It’s too noisy here so I can’t ask my question.”

Lin Yu rolled his eyes the moment his thoughts were cut off by Xu Zhaoyang.

“You’re weak.”

Xu Zhaoyang looked at him in disdain. He got up and snatched Zheng Wei’s mic before turning off the music and loudly saying, “Come, let me introduce you to the Third Brother of our dorm room, Lin Yu. He’s a famous uploader with nearly 200,000 followers on B site…”

“Stop, stop!”

Lin Yu tried to snatch Xu Zhaoyang’s mic from him in embarrassment.

Unexpectedly, Xu Zhaoyang moved away swiftly and continued saying with a smile, “Our Third Brother has a target and it’s the beautiful Zhao Xiaolu. Unfortunately, he’s kind of weak. Can you introduce yourselves to each other?”

1“Why is this even a question? Just do it!”

“Third Brother, stop being so weak!”

Zhou Jie and the guys started laughing, while Liu Xin, Wang Miao, and the other girls began chanting as well.

Seeing how he was put on the spot, Lin Yu smiled helplessly. He grabbed a glass of beer and walked toward Zhao Xiaolu. “Don’t take it to heart. I just wanted to ask you something so can we talk? I’m Lin Yu.”

“Of course, I’m Zhao Xiaolu.”

Zhao Xiaolu smiled. Although she was not joining the fun, she did not seem unapproachable. After clinking glasses, she finished her drink together with Lin Yu.

“You said you wanted to ask me something? What do you want to ask?”

After finishing her drink, Zhao Xiaolu asked Lin Yu curiously.

“I…”

Lin Yu was about to say something before Zhou Jie and the others began chanting.

“Oh!!”

“Old Lin is awesome!”

“Come, let’s turn the music back on. Let’s turn it up!”

The loud music echoed throughout the room again and Lin Yu’s words were instantly overpowered by the volume.

“Can we go outside and talk?”

Lin Yu seemed a little helpless as he got closer to her and shouted his question.

“Huh?”

Zhao Xiaolu still could not hear him.

Lin Yu pointed to the door of the room.

Body language was indeed the magic weapon of communication. Zhao Xiaolu understood Lin Yu right away as she nodded and walked out of the room with Lin Yu after walking past everyone.

However, the duo shocked Zhou Jie and the others, their eyeballs about to pop out of their eye sockets.

“F*ck! Did they progress this quickly?”

“What are both of them doing?”

“Are they clicking with each other after just one beer?”

“We can talk now. What did you want to ask?”

The duo stopped in their tracks in the KTV’s hallway.

The KTV’s soundproof work was pretty decent. Although there were still cries of ‘singing’ that could be heard along the way, they were quite soft.

“Uh… I heard that you used to have bad results but you recently surprised everyone and became an academic genius?”

Lin Yu became a little shy now that they were alone. He thought through his words before saying them.

“That’s right, why are you asking me about that?”

Zhao Xiaolu seemed to be in doubt as she looked Lin Yu up and down before asking him her question.

“Just like what Xu Zhaoyang had said, I’ve been shooting videos and I need a bit of information on this topic. I wanted to ask if you have any tips or skills for studying to share.”

Lin Yu was too embarrassed to say that he wanted to become a surprise academic genius as well and used his videos as an excuse.

“You’re asking the wrong person then. My results only improved a little. Liu Xin and the others blew it out of proportion.”

Zhao Xiaolu seemed like she could not do much for Lin Yu’s question. She said, “If you’re asking about things like this then you should look for the real geniuses in prestigious schools. It would be even better if they’re from high schools too.”

“I’ve asked them.”

Annoyed, Lin Yu said, “Those people either persevered through it all or were born talented. There was one weirdo who usually slept in class but found it easy to remember things just by flipping through his books occasionally.”

“Aren’t you frustrated then?”

Zhao Xiaolu seemed as if she could imagine how annoyed Lin Yu must have felt that moment and could not help but laugh, her eyes becoming beautiful crescents.

After that icebreaker, the awkwardness between the duo was eased and they started having things to talk about. Lin Yu talked about his ‘disease’ of being a slacker as well.

“I’m no academic genius, but I do know some things about studying. Do you really want to know?”

Zhao Xiaolu changed the topic and smiled once again.

She still seemed like a cute, pure, and well-behaved girl. However, when Lin Yu’s gaze landed on her eyes, he felt as if her smile was a little sinister; though it might have been an illusion.

1At first glance, she seemed like a typical girl-next-door, but it now felt like a disguise at a second glance.

“Is she trying to trick me?”

Lin Yu doubted her in his mind but did not show it on his face. He nodded and said, “Yes…if it isn’t too much trouble.”

“It’s no trouble. Actually, it’s pretty simple.”

Zhao Xiaolu said with a smile, “Your problems are only procrastination, laziness, and a lack of concentration and interest in studies.”

“Aren’t these problems big enough?”

Lin Yu was a little confused. He did not understand much about the world of academic geniuses.

“Yes, it’s simple. I used to be like you.”

Zhao Xiaolu smiled and said, “We can solve these issues one by one. First, your interest in studies. Have you played games on your phone? The kinds that are either strategy-based or card games.”

“I’ve played Hearthstone. As for strategy games, I’ve played Three Kingdoms amongst others. However, these locally-made games are all the same. They started out interesting, but I didn’t play them for long.”

Lin Yu shook his head and asked in doubt, “What does this have anything to do with an interest in studying?”

“Didn’t you say that these games were all the same in a way? Their content was the same and some games only require mere mindless taps. Have you ever thought why people are still playing the games to the point of staying up all night and paying for credits?”

Zhao Xiaolu continued talking. It seemed like she was quite familiar with games and was not one of those typical well-behaved students. This was normal as anyone who ended up at the Changhai Vocational College had a flaw. Even if they were not rebellious, they were definitely not honest or well-behaved students.

“Why?”

Lin Yu was stunned after hearing Zhao Xiaolu’s explanation.

This was a question worth thinking about. Many locally-made games were crudely made and had psoriasis-like user interfaces. One only needed to tap his way through the game and attack the monsters. It was a boring mode of gaming, but many people still liked to play them and some even stayed up all night long to do so.
