You Didn't Tell Me the Start of My Transmigration Was a Gate

CH 38.1

 Chapter 38 Part 1: Home

“I don’t really want to meddle either…”

“Then just walk away.”

I replied in a sharp tone. My face was full of exhaustion. “It’s not uncommon for people to die here anyway. So just, you know, pretend you didn’t see anything.”

I said with a hint of defiance.

“Hah, I’m in trouble.”

“Yeah! How about this? You make a bet with me. If I win, you stay by my side, and if you win, I’ll just walk away and let you do whatever you want.”

“What about it…? Actually, I could just stop listening to you and knock you out right now and drag you away, but I want to try to talk you down in the most humane way possible.”

It sounded half threatening. Oh, yeah. Hye-Won didn’t seem to mind saying those kinds of scary things.

I didn’t have a choice anyway.

“…What’s the bet?”

“Okay. What do you want me to do?”

“Hmmm…” She looked so troubled.

‘Right, this happened…’

“Okay, let’s play it fair, we’ll leave it to Chance!”

She pulled a coin out of her pocket. It’s one of those common 500 won coins.

“If a Number comes up, I win, and if a crane comes up, you win. How about it?”

“…Okay, let’s do it the other way around. If it’s a number, I win.”

I gave her the benefit of the doubt and suggested that we do it the other way around. If I think about it, I was very naïve then.

“Okay, then…!”

Ping! The coin spun in midair. My gaze followed its trajectory, and at the same time, the figure of Hye-Won floated into view. Before I could even question her, she had already snatched the coin out of thin air and slammed it down on the ground. It sounded with a murderous thud.

“Boom, it’s a crane, I win.”

My mouth dropped open in disbelief.

‘Ah, that punchy feeling back then. How ridiculous that was. But I still couldn’t help but laugh out loud.’

“… What is this, are you kidding me?”

“Why, there’s no rules about intervening mid-way. Anyway, it’s a crane! Hey, where do you live, show me where the other survivors are?”

She’s so shameless that even I, as a child, muttered, “Huh?” But I can’t complain about that smiling face, because she seemed to have no intention of pretending that she didn’t see me anyway.

“Hah… Follow me.”

I turned around without a word, and Hye-won followed behind my back. I heard the sound of Hye-won chattering away in the distance.

‘Yeah… That’s when my life changed. If it wasn’t for her, I might not have been able to get up. I wouldn’t have had the chance to have this second life.’

“By the way, what’s your name?”

“Han Seo-Ha.”

“I’m Pyo Hye-Won. I’m the Guild Leader of the Backwater Guild. Do you know Backwater?”

“No, I don’t.”

“What?!”

With that nostalgic chatter behind me… I was about to be drifted away again into another illusory stream. The flow of time reversed again. What was flowing in the opposite direction is now flowing in the right.

Why so Suddenly? I’m naturally being pulled in the opposite direction. Is this what gravity is all about? What kind of memory is it that goes against the natural flow and pulls me down so strongly?

But eventually I finally understood…

The floor vibrated with the smell of blood, the desperate me, sprawled on the ground, and Hye-won, with her eyes closed, stabbed by a sword, and.. Pyo Yeon-Won, looking at us with a blank expression on his face. With that sudden realization, I felt a shock like I had been thrown out of the water after being in it for a long time. It felt like I’d just been slapped in the face with cold water.

“Ugh!”

With that one scream, I immediately snapped back into reality. My body was lying on something like a dentist’s chair…

‘Oh, yes, Choi Seok-Chul… The Hunter Test.’

“That must not have been a very pleasant trip.”

Choi Seok-Chul took over for me and pulled out the machine. It was a relief to finally be able to breathe a bit easier. A chill immediately ran down my spine as my sweat was exposed out into the open.

“There you go. That’s it. We’ll evaluate your performance based on your memories, and the results will be out in a week, so check back then.”

I wondered if Choi Seok-Chul saw what I saw. Since he doesn’t know about the regression, does he think that the scenarios that he’d seen in my memories all happened inside the Yeonhwado Gate?

He was speaking so nonchalantly, it was as if he hadn’t seen anything at all. I’m not very familiar with Choi Seok-Chul but I’ve seen so many things… Wait, was the memory before the regression blocked? Or am I the only one who can see it?

However, Choi Seok-Chul’s expression was so calm, and he didn’t seem to have noticed anything at all. It could be that he was simply good at hiding his emotions because he was a skilled hunter, but it was so hard to tell if he did or did not see anything…

‘I’ll have to ask him next time I see him.’

Before the regression occurred, Choi Seok-Chul was no longer the the head of the hunter tests, and his whereabouts were unknown, but this time I might be able to put his ability to good use.

“Finally, you’ve both been through a lot. It’s hard to believe that you’re not even hunters yet, but you did such a splendid job, against that Mutant Queen Ant…”
