The Inconvenient Wife

Chapter 5

Rohan and Sneha walked back home after eating their sumptuous dinner. Sneha had only suggested they walk so she could digest her dinner on the way home. She ate more than usual; as she loved the Tiramisu and was afraid she might lose her meal in a messy, embarrassing way. She didn't want to spoil the evening so she thought walking was the best exercise to avoid a disgusting scene.

As they walked toward their home, which was about two kilometres away they noticed the various shops were starting to close. It was almost 9 p.m. and the shop owners looked tired and were in a rush to get back home to join their near and dear ones. Most shutters were down so only the streetlights contributed to the diffused light that spread out on the cobbled pathways and roads.

The softly radiating streetlight fell on Sneha's face and her clear, soft skin glowed. They didn't walk too close together, just close enough to listen to each other's conversation. She noticed Rohan was trying to look at her by glancing at her from the side and she smiled inside, she was enjoying this moment.

Rohan, on the other hand, was trying to catch her in full view without her noticing and he knew he was doing a poor job of it. He was unable to understand this stupid urge to see Sneha again and again and was trying to fight this impulse by remembering Stella, but he couldn't resist and gave up the fight.

"So how is your boss? Is he kind to you?" asked Sneha innocently.

Rohan took that as an opportunity and looked at her with more interest. "Yes, he is very nice to me and he's planning to send me abroad on a three month assignment. The details are not fixed as of yet."

He thought Sneha might feel bad about it so he added, "I may not take the assignment."

She gave him that dimpled smile he was beginning to really like and said, "Oh! Congratulations! You must take this assignment. I'm sure this is a great opportunity for you," she replied. "As a matter of fact you should goad him into fixing the details soon."

She thought about it and figured she could go stay with her family for those three months. She was amused, but saddened too because it had only been ten days of marriage and she already wanted to go back to her father and she longed to talk to her brother. Talking on the phone just wasn't satisfying enough.

Rohan was astounded by this sudden interest from her but also of sending him away but didn't say a word. They walked on in a silent, comfortable peace until they reached home while he thought about what this meant.

Upon opening the door, for the first time Rohan noticed how neatly everything was arranged. Not a single thing was out of place, it was picture perfect. He slowly made his way toward the bedroom while Sneha went to the kitchen to make coffee. She realized she couldn't eat or drink another morsel more so she also headed toward the bedroom to change. It was too early for her to sleep so she decided she would either watch TV or go to the balcony and watch the wild sea. Rohan would have gone to sleep already she thought.

She entered the bedroom with so many thoughts on her mind that she was surprised to see Rohan holding a magazine and reading it. He was reading National Geographic! She had never seen him reading a magazine in the past ten days, let alone National Geographic. It was her favourite magazine and she usually took that to sit and read until 10 p.m., when Rohan normally went to sleep.
