Key To A Goblin's Heart

Chapter 106 - The Library

Michael\'s POV

"Like what?" I asked Genia.

"For instance you can try a few more magic exclusive to the Goblins. Maybe that will determine whether you are a goblin or a fairy." Genia suggested.

"Okay"!  I exclaimed. "Let;s do that"

"I can\'t… help you with that. As a fairy I never bothered with Goblin magic. I know the ones that are Goblin magic, but I dunno how to do them" replied Genia. "Only a Goblin can help you with that now" She mumbled.

"Cassie," I whispered. "She could have taught me if she were here. I can\'t believe the only person who could have taught me is gone."

"There are other Goblins here," Genia suggested.

"None that I trust". I mumbled.

"Can I ask you something? Why do you trust Cassie so much, when she clearly used you"?

"Genia"! I called out immediately. "She didn\'t do anything I wasn\'t aware of. Yes, we often got on the wrong foot, but never did she ever try to deceive me. I value her honesty more than her rejection" I declared. She pursed her lips but didn\'t say anything.

"Let me show you the library," She declared coldly. "Follow me" her sudden attitude confused me but I did as asked. At the end of our walk I saw a small hut that seemed to be literally out of nowhere. "You can ask for the goblin section. Maybe you will find something relevant there."

"Ask who"?

"The Librarian, Thelma. She is also a half-Goblin. Although her other half is not human" She gave a slight nod before declaring. "I have some business to attend to, I shall take my leave." and she was gone.

I entered the library and found that despite looking tiny from the outside it was very vast. I literally failed to trace the walls in all directions. There was a counter that began from the gate at the end of which remained a middle aged lady wearing round specs and stamping books on the table. Judging from her attire I assumed she was the Librarian.

"Excuse me" I called her but she didn\'t look up from her book and continued to do as she was doing earlier. Given how I was literally right in front of her I knew she heard me, "Can you tell me where the Goblin section is. I-"

"No," Cutting me off, she declared.

"Why not"? I frowned. Wow, she was rude af.

"Are you a Goblin"? In a heavy british accent she asked me.

"Well, no. But-"

"Then no". She finally looked up from her book and gave me a blank stare. "The Goblin section is only for the Goblins. You can only check out the one that is yours." She paused and then took a quick scan of my appearance. "Although, we don\'t have anything for humans so you might as well leave" She declared.

Her audacity baffled me. Usually I would never fight with a librarian. If there was one person whom I got along with well, it was a librarian. I have always been a frequent visitor there and as expected they loved having me there. But today? Today I was having an identity crisis, and there is no way I am taking no for an answer.

"Excuse me"? I raised my voice.

"Shhhhhh" She blurted immediately.

"Don\'t you dare sush me!" I huffed. "As a half Goblin I have the right to see the Goblin section" I declared loudly.

She raised her eyebrows at me and snorted. "The whole island is aware of the only two humans residing here. You can\'t fool me" She scoffed.

"Really"? I raised my eyebrows. I dunno what came over me but I swung my hand as if I was trying to prove something desperately and soon enough her book caught on fire, "Can a human do that"? I asked. I had no idea how I did that, but if that\'s what was gonna give me the upper hand in the current argument I am gonna go ahead and pretend I did that intentionally.

She glared at me for a second before handing me an empty card. "The end of the third row from the left" She declared and used her magic to put out the fire. However she failed to retrieve the original content making her brows furrow. I was waiting for another argument but she didn\'t say anything.

Following her advice, I walked down the aisle and reached the giant glass door which had the ancient inscription below which was written "Goblins".

The door didn\'t seem to be locked so I simply tried to open it, however it was useless.

"What the hell?\'\' I mumbled. Suddenly I recalled the empty card handed over to me and I took it out. As soon as the card touched the door (Which I might add wasn\'t something intentional from my side) there appeared the ancient characters once more. "Man, I need to learn these characters," I mumbled.

Taking out the book that Genia gave me earlier that day I matched the letters. It was a five syllable word and I said the incantation out loud, "Mystanzetgalmin" and just like that the door opened for me. I must say, it feels like saying open sesame from the children folktales of alibaba.

I entered the room finding it utterly empty and wondered why there was no one. I looked around through the books wondering which one I should pick. It didn\'t help that all the books here were marked with the Goblin language making it almost impossible to decipher what they could possibly mean.

After roaming around for a while I saw a shelf where there were intricate markings resembling fire. I took out one of the books, and thanked the heavens that the explanations were in english as I flipped through the pages. However the images attached to it horrified me. Almost every one of them depicted destruction.

I was reminded of the time when Cassie told me that the power of fire was cursed. Maybe I would be better off as a fairy. Should I hide who I am? Just pretend to be a fairy? I know I wanted to discover who I am… but at the same time I was scared how others will feel if they discover who I am. I looked through almost all the books and picked the least horrifying one. It had every few pages depicting how to light lamps or how to light the fireplace. Feeling anxious, I took the book.

At the counter, I asked, "Can I take this book"?

"Haven\'t you already taken it?" She said flatly.

"Don\'t you need to… keep a record?" I asked her hesitantly.

"Of course." She declared. She put forward the register and showed the book was borrowed already. "These books are enchanted, the moment you stepped out of the room it borrowed itself. And if you don\'t return it by the end of seven days, it will find its way back here".

My eyes widened at that piece of information. That was so convenient in it;s own way. No one can steal it. It wouldn\'t matter if it got lost, or someone simply forgot to return it. There would be no penalty. This was so damn perfect.

"The beginners guide to pyromancy, of course you would choose that" She commented.

"Okay, lady listen. I am trying to figure out stuff here. This book is perfectly harmless, I checked".

"I never said it\'s harmful. I am saying that given your fire based powers it makes sense you chose this. Although…" She looked at me and narrowed her gaze and gave me a devious smirk. "I wonder if it will be you who will bring destruction to the Goblin\'s next" She mused.

"I have no intention of destroying anything" I declared.

"You are destroying the silence of this library" She shook her head. I opened my mouth but I struggled to find a perfect comeback. Damn, this woman knew how to get on my nerves.

"Just so you know, there is a good chance I am not Goblin for real" I didn\'t know why I blurted that. Given that my statement only allowed her to confiscate my book. I had this urge to win this argument with her so badly that I can\'t believe I screwed up. Dang it!

"Oh you definitely have Goblin blood. Fire is no fairy\'s game"

"So you knew I was a fairy?" I asked.

"I know everything" She declared with a certain chill that I felt through my spine for a minute, "And I know that you being a fairy was only a hypothesis"

"Then why did you let me in the Goblin section"

"I wanted to humiliate you," She declared. She was way too brutally honest, and that baffled me on a whole different level. I frowned as I wondered what she meant by that. "You see, the card only gives you access if it senses the Goblin magic in you. The fact that you could enter is what makes you a Goblin. Not many people know how these cards work." She smirked leaving me stunned. So I didn\'t actually need to practice these spells to realise my heritage. I am Goblin for real?
