End of The World? Time to Level Up!
Volume 1 : Chapter 1
It was a typical day, the birds sung their song in the morning as they sat by the window. The sound of sprinklers were heard as they wet the green sea of grass that covered the two sport fields as I was staring out the window.
My thoughts were interrupted by someone clearing their throat, I turned my head towards the person.
Mr Sung: I'm glad to welcome you back to reality mister Topaz, can you repeat what I just said to the class?
Sebastian Topaz is my name, I'm an 18 year old student in his last year of education at Saint Johns Cambridge school.
Sebastian: You were telling us about the Pythagoras' theorem, no?
Mr Sung's face contorted to an annoyed look as I just foiled his plan to make me look like an idiot in front of everybody.
Mr Sung: That's correct, he growled and walked past me carrying on with what he was talking about.
I released a sigh that I had unknowingly kept in my chest.
Sebastian: This is such a bore.
My maroon colored eyes glaze over the outside waiting for the day to end, and combed my black with white striped hair out of the way, this was the process that I have been stuck on for 4 years of my life.
I have been naturally smart since I was born, doctors were amazed when a 4 year old child could already work out rudimentary calculus equations.
My flash back was once again intercepted, a pleasant reminder this time, when the school bell rang.
Mr Sung: Alright everyone I want you to study pg 156 for tomorrow's test, bring your holo pads to link with the system.
The mob of students flooded out of the classroom and out the school yard. I walked a steady pace as I listened to the noise of the city bustling around me as people were on all their devices and not minding anyone around them. Technology has evolved drastically since the past. Modern Science governed the world with an iron fist .Machines that were previously thought to be inconceivable, were now an integral part of society. An example of such an advance in technology was the SHIFT power plants, a revolutionary form of energy that left all other energy sources in the past.
My trip was halted as a weird ding resonated in my ear. I looked around to see what that was but I didn't see anything. I didn't think much of the noise as I was in the city and it's noisy as hell during peak traffic.
The journey ended as I arrived at my house. It was a simple double story apartment. As I entered the house I was greeted by darkness.
Sebastian: Turn lights on.
The lights turned on and illuminated the black room, it was a normal living room , a TV sat at the front, couches stood still in front of it, numbers of text books were scattered around on the floor. You may be asking why Sebastian was reading so many scientific books, well, the answer is really simple; he was bored.
The young teen put his bag down and headed up to the bathroom and took a warm shower. After he showered he headed back down to the kitchen and made himself dinner. It consisted of chicken stew on rice with a glass of water .The meal was satisfying to him and afterwards he put the plate in the washing machine and went to bed.
His sleep was interrupted when a ding was heard, he opened his eyes tiredly and witnessed a glowing green screen in front of him.
Sebastian: What the hell?
He wiped his eyes to see if he was still in a dream but no, he wasn't. He waved at it and it was formless, only a hologram of some sort. Sebastian then began reading what was written on the hologram.
System: WARNING! 10 minutes remaining until the plague begins. Does user want a briefing?
Sebastian: The hell is the plague?
The young teens mind tried to wrap around what was going on but it just couldn't think of what was happening. He pressed the option "yes" and a voice resonated in his mind.
System: The briefing will begin now; do feel free to ask questions user.
Sebastian: Ok, how about what the actual hell is going on right now???
System: A man with the name Nero Blaze was the head scientist at Jupiter labs. He was researching the energy called SHIFT that humans are using right now. He figured out how to change the base of the energy making it change to anything he wanted it to be. Slowly he began to go mad not knowing he was playing with forces he shouldn't have. His view of the world became warped, he saw all the things mankind has done and deemed it impure... He was going to cleanse the earth and model everything to a "utopia" in his words. With his contacts he gathered all the energy SHIFT that he could and started to experiment with it, he produced a gas form of SHIFT and released it all over the world. He observed that it changed the genes of the human's, giving them the ability of a game character. He still cant figure out why it did this but just figured that in the gods view humans were nothing but characters in a game they created. Everyone that breathed in the gas began to slowly develop these "systems", but he wasn't done there, he is going to explode all the SHIFT energy he had (in 10 minutes to be precise) killing millions. The dead however, won't stay dead. Any dead person would come back, their strength doubled but lost all there sense and hunger consumed there mind, all the animals will also get mutated into monstrous beast's! That's the end of the briefing.
Sebastian was lost for words, slowly his mind became distorted. Multiple questions started to flood and overwhelm his mind, but then suddenly it stopped. He accepted this as the truth and moved on.
Sebastian: If this is like a game then there would be a status screen, yes?
A green transparent screen popped up in front of him and it showed him his stats.

Sebastian : Hmm this is really like a game he chuckled at himself. If I'm going to survive in a world were the dead roam and animals can really do me some damage, I better distribute those stat points just right.
Sebastian took about 3 minutes to balance out his points.
Strength: 35+10=45
Intelligence: 120
Dexterity: 30+10=40
Luck: 13+20=33
HP: 100/110[regen 1 hp per minute]
MP: 100/100[regen 2 mp per minute]
Sebastian: Alright that looks about right.
He looked down and saw that his body has became a bit more toned.
Sebastian: Guess raising strength improves my body.
Suddenly an enormous explosion was heard, as he looked outside he saw a massive mushroom cloud appear in the middle of the city. It was the explosion of SHIFT mentioned in the briefing...
A ding was heard, and he looked down to the pop up.
System: The plague has started, good luck and be willing to do anything to survive...
