Descent of the Demon God

Chapter 3

“Of course, it’s hard. You know my job doesn’t make it that easy.”

-…How long are you going to make that excuse?

“Well, there will be a Gate Public Warning given out soon for the 26th Gate. I won’t be able to go out if then.”

-Public Warning?

“Yeah. You will hear it through every news station and all castles soon.”

-…

His mother at a loss for words after hearing this. Gate Public Warning. It was the warning given to the citizens when it was predicted that another gate will be opened soon. If the gate was to open, nobody knew what was going to happen.

-Isn’t it faster than usual this time? 26th gate… Your father will be summoned too then. Ugh…

“I’m nearing the PSB. Hanging up.”

-…I know you wouldn’t lie about this, but I just hope you didn’t just ruin this arrangement because you are seeing ‘her.’

“Yeah, yeah.”

Yimyung answered satisfyingly, as it seemed like his mother was giving up. But…

-I persuaded Director Jang so hard. When the warning is lifted, go ahead to Peking and see them. You know their phone number and messenger ID, so you talk with them to arrange a time to meet them, okay?

“UGH!”

Yimyung frowned. He declined to meet with them on messenger, intentionally making his message to sound rude, but it seemed like his mother contacted them again to make it work. Yimyung was annoyed beyond words and his mother continued speaking.

-You are my son. I know every inch of your petty schemes.

Mother was on top of him from the beginning.

-Listen to your mother. You are 36 already. Stop wasting your life as a single man. I’m doing all this just because you…

“Whew.”

Yimyung took in a breath on his lit cigarette as his mother started lecturing again.

‘You’re doing it for me, you said?’

In truth, it wasn’t. He was never a loved child in his house. If his mother was hoping her son would marry, he would have gotten married to so many women in the past.

‘It’s not like we are being bred for babies or something… f**k.’

Yimyung wasn’t one to speak politely, but he couldn’t say this out loud in front of his mother. It was his mother after all.

-Anyhow, please listen to your mother. If you let this one pass, I will not stand idly this time. Whew… I just hope the world returns back to time when we can just book a flight ticket and fly over the world. What is going on in this world…

“Yeah, yeah. I’ve heard that airplane story so many times.”

Airplane. It was a transportation method long forgotten in history. His mother always said that it was possible to move between castles or outside the country by airplane when she was young. But when the Gate opened, moving through air had become impossible. Because of this, Yimyung had never ridden on an airplane. His mother told him that he flew on an airplane when he was about 3 years old, but that was before he could even remember things.

-Are you making your mother sound like a old hag again? The airplane was the best thing in the world! You just don’t know it.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course it is. I mean, if we can move through skies, why wouldn’t it? But the time we humans used to control the air had gone in the…”

Yimyung then stopped. He had to question what he just saw as something dropped from skies through the tall buildings.

‘What was that?’

It was too far to see it clearly, but that ‘something’ was surely falling from the sky.

-Huh? Why are you stopping in the middle of…

*buzz*

The phone call then cut off, with the PSB logo showing up on the screen. Yimyung then heard the familiar voice of a PSB Communication Agent.

-This is PSB. Unidentified flying object falling in the middle of 2nd Street, Chulsuh District.

“Flying object?”

He was driving through the 5th Street of Chulsuh District at the moment. It was very close. The flying object seemed to be the one he just saw falling through the buildings. And if an object fell from the sky, then maybe it had connection to the Gate.

-All PSB Agents near 2nd Street should be armed and ready to dispatch to the location.

He was unlucky as hell. He was just on the way back, and now he had to be back on the field again.

“God, dammit. We don’t even have the Public Warning out yet. What in the world is going on here?”

Yimyung ranted as he pushed the red and blue button located on top of the center fascia screen. A siren light rose on top of the white SUV he was driving.

*Beeeeeeep*

The loud siren rang from the vehicle, and Yimyung tilted his steering wheel to the side. There was one good thing about ringing the siren. Even in such rush hour, all cars had to move out to the side and make way for him to move through. Yimyung then pressed on the speaker button on the screen and spoke.

“This is Yimyung, 3rd Team leader of PSB Homicides Department. I am near 2nd street, and am on my way to the location.”

-Understood, sir.
