Dead's Requiem

26 Rise of the Oni

Everybody, including the rowdy and raucous thugs became silent. Even the Second Brother whose voice was the loudest shut his mouth up. Clearly, he was also fearful of the voice but it was also him who first spoke up. "Ehem First Brother. Shall we proceed?"

"I don't want anyone acting preposterous inside my territory. I don't care who your father is or who you're blood related with. I'll rip them to shreds." The voice was clearly angry but as it ranted, the voice grew calmer. "Proceed."

Second Brother stood up and clapped his hands.

"Brothers and sisters, there were two roads that was laid before us: we can either remain who we are or become a slave under a system called the government. We were forced into using the latter road, the road that did not care about our needs. We have been repressed! Our brothers and sisters who tried to rebel against the system have all been captured and killed by them.

"The apocalypse has freed us from the clutches of the system, from the laws and the so called moralities. A weak force and small force like us shall be powerful if we combine our strength. We shall protect each other's back while accepting all those like us.

"We can only be powerful if we are strong. To be strong does not mean that we have to be many. History can tell us that even people like Napoleon Bonaparte, a small man, can lead an army and win many wars. What is important is the desire! If we really want it, if we crave for it, if we will die without it - that is desire and this desire shall motivate us to act.

"I can assure you, from the bottom of my heart, that our future is bright. This abuse will never happen again! We shall rise and destroy the system before they can even fix themselves for they are like cockroaches whose tenacity is unmatched. It is true that vermins never die but now, we will incinerate them and obliterate them to oblivion."

"Brothers and sisters, today, on the 10th day of the apocalypse, let it be known that today will be the day that the Oni shall rise once again!"

The thugs clapped in unison and chanted the words "Oni, oni, oni!"

Second Brother waited for the crowd to calm down a bit before he clapped his hands three times. The thugs became silent and looked at him with fervor. "Ladies and gentlemen, we shall have a spectacular show for today. We have prepared 50 sacrifices to our lord Shuten Doji."

Second brother lifted his hand and pointed at the prisoners in the middle of the basketball court. "Although the system and the society deems us evil, we know that deep in our hearts we are good people. Hence, we will allow five of them to live and that is, if they deserve the right to live!"

The Fourth Brother stood up and controlled ten swords to slowly levitate on top of the prisoners.

Somewhere within the crowd, a man asked, "Are we going to make us kill each other?"

Nobody answered but they all knew that, of the fifty of them, only five of them will live. Nobody wanted to die.

"I'm not going to die here!" A fat man about 30 years old ran towards the exit. No prisoner followed him and none of the thugs stopped him either. The prisoners were smart enough to know that escaping would only mean death.

A few seconds later, the people heard a horrifying scream.

"Well, that's too bad. He would have lived if he tried his chance." The Second Brother commented nonchalantly. "Without further ado, the sacrifice begins."

It was chaotic. Everything started in a split second. The ten swords fell from the air. Before it even landed on the ground, the rumble started. People punched whoever it was that was beside, in front or even behind them. Those who were Metahumans showcased their powers. Too bad for them, they were the first ones who were taken down by the people.

"That guy is a Metahuman!"

"Get him before he kills all of us!"

"There's another Metahuman!"

"There's seven of them!"

"Take them down first!"

"That's right, make the fight fair!"

The seven Metahumans were immediately outcasted. Of course, Haeckel did not belong in this category. In fact, when he was punched by the person beside him, he fell on the floor. Since his body was frail and weak at this time, he was unable to defend himself.

While lying on the floor, Haeckel was watching the commotion all around him. One by one, the Metahumans were picked off by the normal ones. For every Metahuman killed, there were three humans who would also die.

"Why are you killing us? They are the enemies, not us!"

"Then why don't you kill them?" The Metahumans were unable to answer for they too were afraid of the thugs who call themselves Oni. "Then we shall fight to the death."

The people continued to fight. Blood splattered on the ground and on Haeckel who was still on the floor. He was actually feigning his death while observing the scene around him. A weak person should always know how to think! That's exactly what he is right now - a weak person.

(My body temperature is getting hotter. I'm going to die from fever at this rate. What should I do?) Sweat poured down his face nonstop. His vision was turning black and blue as he tried to keep himself awake. Who knows when he will wake up if he passed out right now?

The last Metahuman had now died. Its corpse landed right beside Haeckel who was still conscious. Coincidentally, this Metahuman was also the policeman who was the most logical out of all the people there. He tried to speak but blood was the only thing to come out of his mouth.

"The last Metahuman has died! Too bad, you should have kept them alive at least until after the tenth minute. What's after the tenth minute you ask? You will know in ten, nine... five, four, three, two and one! The 10th minute has arrived. Good luck to all of you and may Oni guide your hands."

ROAR!

From the door where the fat man previously escaped, a tide of zombies came in like a flood.
