You Didn't Tell Me the Start of My Transmigration Was a Gate

CH 17.2

Chapter 17 Part 2: Negotiation

“We are the Red Flames.”

He continued, pointing his finger at the pattern on his chest.

“… And You’re a Child.”

There was a moment of silence. I was so unfortunate that I couldn’t even say anything to rebut.

“Was I too harsh? I’m sorry. However, I think you need to figure out the current situation. We won’t be acting separately from the Backwater Guild. You may not be aware, but the Clearing Units only brought in combatants, so they still need assistance from the scouting units to get information, and to navigate around the gate. The Backwater Guild is currently in charge of this district, and we need to cooperate with them.”

He explained the whole situation briefly, then added a little truth.

“If we reject them now, and tell them that we’d rather look for a different scouting team, they’ll be insulted. It’s like calling them ‘Weak’ in the face. We have no intention of fighting against Backwater over this.”

So it’s because of the relationship between guilds. I was more frustrated because their reason was more reasonable compared to my sudden impulse. If it had been for some absurd reason, I would have laughed at him, For being part of a large guild but was still trying to coerce me.

Just then, the tent opened and Hyewon-Unnie returned.

She said,  “I’ve checked all my contacts, but I don’t have any leads, so I’ll let you know if I find anything.”

She felt the chilly atmosphere inside the tent, and asked sharply.

“What did you guys talk about?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing.”

My words and Kim Ki-taek’s words overlapped. He chuckled, but I shuddered with an incomprehensible displeasure. This was not a group that I wanted to be associated with.

After our negotiations broke down, they took turns escorting me. Backwater1 scouted the outside looking for survivors, while Red Flames2 guarded my surroundings. To be precise, They weren’t trying to protect me. They were just trying to watch out and see if Beelzebub would send me another message.

As things turned out, it seems like I had no choice but to find another way.

In this situation, if Beelzebub decides to play a prank again and send another monster, Hyewon-Unnie might be put into danger again. I couldn’t lose my Unnie again. It took me a while to see her alive, and breathing again, even in my dreams she would only ruthlessly show me her back. How could I put her in that kind of situation again?

“The food’s getting cold.”

Jeon Chung-Woon, who was in charge, blurted out. Stopped stirring the spoon as I thought about it.

Come to think of it.

Why is this person here?

Originally, the first clearing unit to enter this gate was… Wiped out. They disappeared without a trace and were declared missing in action. No bodies were ever found, and there’s no way Jeon Chung-Woon was among them.

He must have bumped into them while clearing the other gate.

If he had joined this gate-clearing unit, there would be no way I would run into him after that. Moreover, he had a reputation as a Hunter with a fairly high ranking. Aside from the Guild Leaders, he had the highest ranking, so he was actually the most skilled Hunter that could be put into clearing this Gate.

“Jeon Chungwoon-ssi.”

He looked at me, after I called out. He had a questioning look on his face. No, actually, he was expressionless, so I wasn’t really sure, but I guess that’s what it felt like. Probably.

“Why did you enter this gate?”

“To clear it.”

No that’s not what I meant.

“It’s dangerous here. They say it’s the largest gate ever.”

“Gates are always dangerous.”

It’s like I’m talking to a wall. The first time I was trapped inside this gate, my communication skills were not as bad.

He looked at me with a puzzled expression instead, as if I was asking the obvious.

“Nope. Nevermind.”

I abandoned the conversation and went back to stirring my spoon. I also turned my head back to my bowl without asking any more questions. It would be hard to get any information out of this man. Or maybe, just maybe, it was a highly calculated rejection, though he looked too nonchalant to be doing so.

I wish I could write this to Beelzebub.

I nudged the stone in my hand. It was an item I got after the death of Cerberus.

「Cerberus’s Oath」

If I can get him to promise not to harm Hyewon-Unnie with this, then everything will be resolved.

But the condition for triggering it is, you must meet face-to-face. It must be for mutually agreed upon purposes. Also, both parties must place both hands on the stone and speak their oaths aloud. That’s three things that make it pretty tricky.

This means that you cannot just sneak in and secretly make an oath. The contract must be both mutual and unconditional.

I’ve been trying to jog my memory, in order to recall the past. However, for me it had been nearly a decade ago… I couldn’t remember everything perfectly. Still, I tried to recall at least one more memory that was related to Beelzebub.

Come to think of it, I had once met a warlock who had contracted with Beelzebub on the battlefield.
