Chapter 15

Could it be that this was the effect of those herbs?

“Miss?”

“Huh? I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you.”

“Miss, if you have a stomach ache or something, please let me know, alright?”

“Hmm, okay. I won’t do that anymore.”

After a while, I walked away from Pihne and told Kuhn what I had seen before.

“It was very shiny. Didn’t I just see the magic of nature?”

[I can’t see it either so how can you see it?]

“Oh, I really saw it.”

It was a very colorful twinkle… if it wasn’t magic, what was it? It was even more strange because it looked like it was taken from a human figure rather than an ordinary bunch of lights.

‘I’ll have to check the grass one more time later.’

[First of all, I’ll keep looking for herbs. It is good for your body, so it will help you grow.]

I was startled by Kuhn’s words that he would make me go through that repeatedly. “I… will eat it again?”

[Should you only eat one? It isn’t enough to revive the power of witches even if you eat a hundred times.] Kuhn’s tone was sly.

I couldn’t erase the disgusted expression on my face when I saw Kuhn like that.

* * *

The days had gone by so quickly since I came here. Maybe it was because there were so many people I met in a day.

‘I should write a letter to Dahlia before it gets too late.’

As soon as that thought occurred to me, I asked Pihne to give me a piece of paper and some envelopes. The sunset came quickly as I was contemplating what to write.

I really saw my father in the dining room in the evening as Dante said. I did something wrong so I felt rather awkward seeing him after a long time, so I silently watched as they served the food.

But today, the amount of food was no joke. I opened my mouth as I watched the stream of food constantly coming to the table.

“Wow… my stomach is going to explode.”

The chef smirked. “I heard that lady’s tongue is healed so I made dishes good for your body. I made enough so please tell me if you want to eat more!”

Seeing more than twenty kinds of dishes served, I grabbed the fork as if possessed, deciding which one I should try first as I filled my stomach.

“Do you need a friend?”

As I was about to pick up a chicken leg that had been cooked in a brown sauce, I heard my father’s voice. I raised my head while holding my fork. “Friends?”

“Yes.”

‘Friend…’

Come to think of it, I’d never had friends in this life. I never thought of making friends because I was only concerned about escaping from the temple and helping my sick mother.

“I don’t need friends.”

What if I made friends now and then my identity was revealed to the temple?

“Then do you need animals?”

“…?”

I looked at my father, not knowing his meaning, and tilted my head. “Animal?”

“No?”

“Of course.”

Dad’s questions continued.

‘Ah.’

Apparently, Pihne had told him about that incident.

‘Or maybe Aaron reported it.’

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to ask something like that. Why on earth did someone report that I needed an animal? I shook my head.

“Now, don’t just pick anything and eat it.”

“…”

I didn’t pick up anything though. If my father hadn’t been ingesting such potent medicine then I wouldn’t have had such an accident. My entire purpose for being here was to save him.

I pouted, concluding that he wasn’t curious about me, only that he wanted me to no longer be a bother.

“Mariette, answer me,” Dad urged me.

‘Oh, what else do you want me to say…’

“…Yes,” I groaned. And to change the subject, I spoke to Dante, who was standing next to my father. “Does Dante eat this too? Aren’t you going to eat dinner?”

“Me? I can eat later. I will eat later so you don’t have to worry about me.”

“I see… but we can eat together.”

“It’s better for me to see you two having a good time.”

“Hmm, then I’ll have to ask Pihne if she eats this too. Oh, by the way, you should eat more, Dad! Thank you for the food.”

If I put something in his mouth then he couldn’t ask me any more questions, then I wouldn’t have to answer. I took a large piece of chicken leg meat with a fork and put it in his mouth.

“Take it easy.”

I was still chewing on a chunk of meat. “Eh?”

Normally, he would say one word as opposed to my ten words, so it was fascinating to see him talk a lot today.

‘That’s what Dad said, right?’

As if to quell my doubts, Dad opened his mouth once more. “I told you to take it easy.”

I didn’t quite understand the words and looked at the two adults. Dante was staring too, looking at me and my father in disbelief.

‘We’re thinking of the same thing, right?’

As if he heard me telepathically, Dante pursed his lips and briefly nodded.

‘Wow…’

After about ten days, I could now talk properly with my dad. It felt a lot better than I expected. It was similar to the pleasure I felt when I used to comfort and coax sullen children at the daycare.

There was a bit of nagging in his tone.

I felt so good that the corners of my lips went up on their own, so I grabbed my fork and smiled softly. “Hmm, Dad!”

If he said to take it easy then I had to do it! I put the rest of the chicken leg meat in my mouth.

If we could communicate like today, would I get along with Dad in the future just like Mom and I did? It was something to look forward to.

* * *

The maids who had gathered at the dining room to serve dinner were busy looking at each other and laughing. It was very different from before when they always bowed their heads as if they had committed a sin.

Dante secretly felt proud when he saw the scene. It happened in just ten days – a person who gave life to the mansion that might as well have been a pile of rubble despite its inhabitants.

It was the effect of the little master who had just turned six years old, only half the size of an adult.

Dante hadn’t been able to hide his surprise at the fact that his master had finally found Yurie’s location. He thought that he would be able to go back the way he was. However, it wasn’t Yurie but a little girl who returned with his master.

“Dad, have you tried this too? It’s delicious… Oh! You need to eat more vegetables.”

“…”

The little master was like a cute doll, the perfect mix of Yurie and his master.

‘What if the little master’s bright eyes are scared to death by the atmosphere of the mansion on her first day? What if she can’t sleep at night?’

“I was so sad that I couldn’t feel the taste for a week. Hmmm, it’s my fault, but…”

He had his misgivings, but after watching for a few days, he thought that she might be as strong as Madam Yurie, or even stronger. Even though he resented her, it was a shock to Dante that she held out her hand to her biological father first.

Perhaps all of the servants who worked at the duke’s residence, barely surviving day to day, thought that way.

‘What kind of life made her strong?’

He wondered, but at the same time, he didn’t want to know.

When he saw her, he wondered if the soul inside her was covered in scars, ones that made her strong.

“What’s Daddy’s favorite food?”

While Dante was going through a turmoil of emotions, her large, rosy eyes and chubby cheeks were constantly moving. She was talking with such a bright voice today.

“Nothing.”

On the other hand, at most, Callen’s answers were short. At one point, he felt like he wanted to scold his master. Nevertheless, the little master didn’t know how to give up.

“I love sweets. I like cookies and I like chocolate too.”

Dante couldn’t help the smile that crept across his lips as he saw Mariette talking to his lord nonstop. Others had grins on their faces as well. The chef, who had been working with his hands all day preparing dinner, wiped a reddened nose.

“The best thing is the chocolate cake. Oh, I like strawberries too. How delicious it would be if the two of us eat it together!”

Dante clenched his fists and swallowed a laugh. He was surprised that she was such a cheerful person.

“I’m going to give Dad some chocolate cake topped with strawberries later. You might like it too. Ah, I want to eat that.”

Chuckle~

Callen laughed briefly, like a short burst of wind. Dante widened his eyes.

“Uh…? Dad laughed.”

Surprisingly, Mariette seemed to have the same reaction. The maids were also busy exchanging glances with each other. After a while, Callen’s expressionless face returned.

From that day on, when Callen talked about dessert, he thought of only one thing: a chocolate cake with strawberries. As if he had fallen in love with it.
